How many Gigabytes (GB) are in a Terabyte (TB)?

When working with Microsoft 365 or Azure, you often come across terms like gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB), especially when it comes to storage and data transfer. But what do these terms really mean and how do they relate to each other?

What is a Gigabyte?

A gigabyte is a unit of digital information used to indicate the size of files or the capacity of storage media. In the decimal system, often used in science, commerce and certain computer applications, 1 GB represents 1,000,000,000 bytes. However, in the binary interpretation, especially relevant in the context of RAM and certain operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, 1 GB represents 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024^3 bytes).

What is a Terabyte?

A terabyte is an even larger unit of digital information. As with gigabytes, a terabyte can have different values depending on the system used. In the decimal system, 1 TB equals 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. However, in the binary system, which is common in Windows operating systems, 1 TB equals about 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (1024^4 bytes).

Conversion from TB to GB

Conversion from terabytes to gigabytes can be done in two ways:

  • In the decimal system: 1 TB = 1000 GB
  • In the binary system: 1 TB = 1024 GB

This conversion is especially important when estimating how much data you can store or transfer with Microsoft 365 and Azure services.

Applications in Microsoft 365 and Azure

When using Microsoft 365 and Azure, data storage plays a big role. Whether storing documents, hosting websites or managing databases, understanding the size of data in GBs and TBs is essential. For example, when choosing an appropriate storage plan for your Azure database or estimating the space needed for your SharePoint-site in Microsoft 365, it is helpful to have a clear picture of these units.

It is also important to understand the relationship between data transfer and bandwidth. Bandwidth, often expressed in megabytes per second (MBps), is the capacity of your network to transfer data. This is especially relevant when managing the network performance of your Microsoft 365 or Azure services.
