What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique number assigned to any device connected to a computer network using the Internet Protocol. The IP address identifies the device on the network and allows data to be sent and received between different devices. There are two versions of the IP address: IP version 4 (IPv4) and IP version 6 (IPv6). IPv4 is the most common version and uses a string of four numbers (e.g., 192.168.0.1) to identify a device. IPv6 is the newest version and uses a longer string of numbers and letters (for example, 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334) to identify a device.
