💻 How to install Windows from a USB flash drive in 3 steps

In this article, I explain how to install Windows from a USB flash drive. This is often necessary for computer builders, vendors or other intermediaries who want to offer Windows pre-installed.

Installing Windows 10 or 11

If you are looking to install Windows 11, go through this articleiker or visit the web pages below:

Step 1: Format the disk and set the primary partition as active

  • Connect the USB flash drive to your PC.
  • Open Disk Management: right-click Start and then choose Disk Management.
  • Format the partition: Right-click on the USB disk partition and choose Format. Select the FAT32 file system to boot BIOS-based or UEFI-based PCs. This is almost always required on modern systems.
  • Set the partition as active: Right-click the USB disk partition and click Mark partition as active.

Step 2: Copy the Windows Setup files to the USB flash drive

  • Use Explorer to copy and paste the entire contents of the Windows product DVD or ISO to the USB flash drive. Copying can also be done through Windows 7's Windows USB Tool. (Also for Windows 11)

Step 3: Install Windows on the new PC using a USB flash drive

  • Connect the USB flash drive to a new PC.
  • Turn on the PC and press the key that opens the boot device selection menu for the computer. For most computer systems, this is one of the following keys: Esc/F10/F12 keys. Select the option that will boot the PC from the USB flash drive.
  • Windows Setup launches. Follow the instructions to install Windows.
  • Remove the USB flash drive after installation.
